This year’s IEEE VIS was once again packed with exciting and insightful research. We are delighted that three HDIL contributions were featured across the program.

Design Space for Embedded Urban Visualizations.
We presented our work on a design space for embedding visualizations in urban environments, highlighting how data can be meaningfully integrated into real-world cityscapes. This paper proposes a structured, multi-dimensional framework that captures how embedded visualizations relate both to their physical surroundings and to viewers, grounded in theories of situated and immersive visualization, urban informatics, and co-creative ideation workshops. We demonstrated how this design space can support the generation of speculative urban visualization concepts.
The UDV Card Deck.
The Urban Data Visualization (UDV) card deck is a tool for ideation and critical reflection in urban data visualization. Our recent CG&A paper introduces the deck, explains its goals, and illustrates its use across several case studies. At VIS, we presented the CG&A paper in the poster session, where we also demonstrated hands-on activities that allowed visitors to explore the dimensions and considerations of the card deck, and engage directly with the card deck and its activities.
Book on data physicalizations.
Our book Making with Data (edited by Samuel Huron, Till Nagel, Lora Oehlberg & Wesley Willett) was showcased at the AK Peters / CRC Press booth, alongside the other excellent titles in the visualization series edited by Tamara Munzner and Alberto Cairo.
Bonus: Damla Çay as VISAP General Chair.
A special highlight: Former PhD student Damla served as General Chair of the IEEE VIS Arts Program (VISAP) this year. We’re incredibly proud to see her shaping the community and continuing the tradition of strong arts-meets-vis contributions.
And of course, some of the most memorable moments came from the countless conversations that will continue to inspire our next steps.
